Overview

At Nagra Kudelski, I led the design of a new streaming platform for Eurovision Sport, created to support the broadcasting of live sporting events for a broad international audience. This was a large end-to-end design project where I worked independently across the full product experience, from defining the component library and core UX patterns through to responsive web designs, mobile app experiences, video player states and scheduling.

At the start of the project, there was little to no established brand direction, so part of the challenge was creating a product that felt clear, modern and scalable while also staying flexible enough to evolve as the visual identity developed. As the branding matured, I adapted the design system and interface to align with it without losing consistency across the wider platform.

My Role

As a Lead UX Designer at Nagra, I was responsible for shaping the product experience across the platform. Working largely independently, I designed the foundations of the experience and translated them into a consistent system that could support multiple parts of the product.

My work included:

  • creating the component library and core design foundations

  • designing the responsive web platform

  • designing the mobile application

  • adapting the UI as branding evolved

  • designing the video player experience and player states

  • designing BI blocking experiences within the player

  • creating the scheduling system

  • designing key product areas including Home, Media Card, Schedule, Explore, Archive, Sport/Federation pages, Settings, Login/Signup and app download journeys

  • ensuring the platform could support multiple languages

The challenge

The challenge was to design a streaming platform for live sport from the ground up, without the benefit of an established product language or mature brand system. The experience needed to work across web and mobile, support live and on-demand content, and feel intuitive for a broad international audience.

On top of that, the platform needed to handle the complexity that comes with sports streaming: scheduling, content discovery, federation-level browsing, player behaviour, account journeys and localisation. The experience also had to be flexible enough to support future growth without constant redesign.

Designing For Live Sport

Designing for live sport is different from designing for general media.

Users are often looking for something quickly. They want to know what is live now, what is coming up next, and how to get to the right content without friction. That made the Schedule and player experience especially important.

I designed a scheduling system that made upcoming events easier to browse and understand, helping users move naturally from discovery into viewing. This became one of the core parts of the platform and is still in use today with relatively little change. Inspired by the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) used in television, it presents scheduled content in a clear, day-by-day format, highlighting the times of each event, enhancing user engagement and satisfaction.

A less disruptive way to advertise during live sport

One feature I designed was a more unique AD experience for live sport streaming. Instead of fully interrupting playback, the live content continued to play on screen while the ad appeared alongside it. The main content was muted during the ad, but viewers could still see what was happening in the match or event.

This created a less disruptive viewing experience than a traditional full takeover. For live sport especially, where timing matters and users do not want to miss key moments, this approach helped balance commercial needs with the expectations of the audience. It allowed advertising to happen without completely pulling viewers away from the action.

Responsive and multilingual design

A key part of the work was designing for both responsive web and mobile app experiences, ensuring the product felt consistent while still being appropriate to each platform. The interface also needed to support multiple languages, which meant thinking carefully about layout flexibility, content length, navigation clarity and the way components behaved across different translations.

This was especially important in a platform like Eurovision Sport, where content is intended for an international audience and usability cannot depend on one language or region.

Outcome

The outcome was a fully designed sports streaming platform with a strong UX foundation across web and mobile. By creating the product structure, component library and core user journeys from the ground up, I helped establish a scalable experience that could support live sport broadcasting, content discovery and multilingual access.

One of the strongest indicators of success is that the platform has stayed true to the original experience I designed before leaving in 2024. As of writing this in 2026, much of the structure and direction remain intact.

The longevity of a product I led independently demonstrates that the foundations were solid and that the design decisions were made with clarity and foresight.

Reflection

This project was a strong example of owning a product from the ground up. It pushed me to think beyond screens and into systems, scalability and long-term product structure. Designing the platform largely independently meant every decision had to hold up across multiple surfaces, user needs and technical constraints.

It also reinforced the value of building strong foundations early. By defining a reusable component library, responsive patterns and a clear product structure, I was able to create a platform that not only launched well, but also held its shape over time.
